You’re arriving at the airport: the best choice for getting there in Paris

Paris reach from airport

You’re arriving at Charles de Gaulle Airport. If you are traveling light, don’t hesitate: the train (RER) is your best choice, no matter your destination in Paris. RER Line B will take you to the Port Royal Station in 40 minutes for only €10. You are no more than a 5-minute walk from the Raspail Montparnasse Hotel.
You’re arriving at Orly Airport: still light, choose the Orlybus and pay only €7.70 to reach the terminus, Denfert Rochereau, where the metro line 4 will take you 2 stations to Vavin, practically at the steps of the hotel. Unless you prefer the bus, No. 68, which brings you to the door in 3 stops.
If you’re not alone or your luggage is heavy, a taxi is necessary, and good news, since March 1st, all taxis must charge a fixed 55-euro rate from Charles de Gaulle and 35 euros from Orly.
It is of course better to have a little cash, in small denominations, to pay for your ride.
Finally, you can use a shuttle, offered by many companies, but it should be reserved well in advance. These shuttles go from hotel to hotel, which lengthens your journey time, and this service is offered for 39 euros per person.
So forget about it if you are traveling with two or more.

Taxis, which you must know how to use

conseil taxis parisiens

  • it is not always easy to find a taxi, especially during peak hours, although there are as many taxis in Paris as in New York.

You can hail a taxi on the street (unless you are within 50 meters from a taxi stand), and you should know if they are busy if the sign on the roof is red or if they are free with a green sign instead.

It may occur that the driver refuses to take you to your destination. It is theoretically allowed if you travel to a distant suburb, if you have a pet, if there are 4 of you, and if the driver is about to finish the shift.
The thorny issue of the tip is at your discretion in France, and you can absolutely pay just the amount shown on the meter (which is reliable since it is regularly monitored by the city) if you are not satisfied with the quality of the vehicle or the friendliness of the driver. Up to you…

  • The metro

The very first line of the Paris metro was inaugurated in 1900 on the occasion of the first World Exhibition in Paris. Since that distant time, it has branched out through the city, and you should be able to go anywhere in Paris with the metro for the very reasonable price of €1.80. The icing on the cake: the same tickets can be used on the bus network.

The bus

Paris offers a dense network of bus lines.
This mode of transport offers you the advantage to enjoy Paris, its architecture and its people from your seat.

Private cars

Unlike some European capitals, the Uber application works perfectly in Paris, and you can, if you have downloaded it to your smartphone, take advantage of the Uber vehicles’ reduced fares and premium service.

By bike

Paris by bike and on foot

For athletes (with a credit card): the Velib (self-service bicycle): more than 15,000 bikes are available in more than 1,000 stations. Warning: some parts of Paris are perched on a hill, and it’s imperative to have muscular calves and a good, in-shape heart to reach Montmartre on Vélib.

Finally, if you really want to discover Paris, its neighborhoods, and its perfectly preserved Haussmannian-style buildings keep walking. Paris is actually a small town that you can, at a good pace, cross in 2 hours.

You choose the most suitable means of transport.
Happy discovering and have a pleasant stay in Paris.
