If you like beautiful things, if you are curious, visit the Saint Ouen Flea Market

The flea markets of Paris, known as “Fleas”, find their origin in the Middle Ages. Fleas and other parasites supposedly infested the old clothes collected and sold by ragpickers in markets in the capital. In 1635, Richelieu forbade the recovery in Paris. Ragpickers or more poetically “moon fishermen” settled in markets on the outskirts of Paris. Saint Ouen Flea market was officially born in 1885.

Recognized as the largest antique market in the world, the Saint Ouen Flea Market welcomes nearly five million visitors a year and offers the riches of museums.  There are paintings, furniture, light fixtures, books and unusual objects from all periods, nesting in several markets, including:

– the Biron market offers, since 1925, reference goods in the history of Art, scattered around 200 stands of art objects, furniture, scientific objects, paintings and ceramics, from the 18th century to Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.

– The Dauphine Market and its 3000m² skylight, opened in 1991, houses ultra-specialized merchants :  recordstores, booksellers, antique dealers specializing in XXth century vintage furniture but also a gallery of contemporary art and, last but not least, since 2013, the Futuro House created by Matti Suuronen in the 1960s / 1970s. This house has become  the symbol of the Market and is photographed by thousands of visitors each day.

-the Serpette & Paul-Bert markets, which bring together many shops specialized in luxury antiques. There are jewels and old luggage, silverware & glassware, woodwork & art deco lighting, …

Thanks to its eclecticism, Saint Ouen’s flea market is now regularly patronized by wellknown personalities from the show, fashion, art and decoration worlds.
