The chairs of Luxembourg Garden
The Luxembourg Garden, close to the Hotel Raspail Montparnasse, is ideal for daydreaming and serenity and offers to its visitors chairs and seats that can be moved around the large basin or in the shaded alleys.
As early as the 18th century, strollers fell under the spell of the Luxembourg garden where and chairs, more comfortable than the old benches, were put at their disposal for a mere 40 cents. The management was then entrusted to private contractors who paid rent to the Senate. In 1843, nearly 1,500 chairs were made available to the strollers on sunny days.
In the 1920s, the “Senat” armchair, created by the Ateliers de la Ville de Paris and still present today, moved into the Luxembourg garden. Robust, comfortable, simple and painted green, it became the emblem of the garden. It allows to sit comfortably (and for free since 1974) to daydream, read or relax. Parisians and tourists adore its style which evokes the Paris of the Roaring Twenties. You can also find it at the Tuileries . It was recently adopted by the University of Harvard in the United States.
This icon of Parisian urban heritage will preserve your comfort while staring at the Luxembourg garden, inspired by the Florentine garden of Boboli, created in 1612 at the request of Queen Marie de Medicis and at the Palais du Luxembourg, where the French Senate hold its cessions since 1799.
