Since September 2018, the Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) is honoured through the Maillol museum exhibition ! You have until January 20 to discover the expo, realized in collaboration with the Giacometti Foundation. A gold nugget highly recommended by the Raspail Montparnasse hotel …

Come and discover the exhibition “Giacometti, between tradition and avant-garde”

This past June, the city was bursting with excitement with the opening of the Giacometti Institute. The workshop where Giacometti lived and worked from 1926 to 1966, was reconstructed as it was at the end of his life. You can visit it at the 5, rue Victor-Schœlcher, close to the boulevard Raspail. Big fan of his work, the hotel Raspail Montparnasse would not miss the sublime exhibition in his honour at the Maillol museum!

Entitled “Giacometti, between tradition and avant-garde”, the exhibition is a re-reading his work in two stages. To begin, you discover his early works. Then, the sculptures born of his meetings with the avant-gardes Parisian artists. His career is thus highlighted with 25 works by artists who preceded him, inspired him, were his mentor, or worked with him.

The exhibition presents more than 50 Giacometti’s sculptures, compared with works of major artists such as Rodin, Bourdelle, Maillol, Brancusi, Zadkine, Csaky, Richier … Facing the Three Nymphs of the Prairie by Aristide Maillol, the Giacometti’s sculptures of primitive inspiration take indeed a whole new dimension.

The journey is chronological. Each collaboration and each break mark an evolution of style, a step in Giacometti’s career. It is also the way to understand his influences, and sources of inspiration.

Graphic arts and archival documents enhance the content. Through the artist’s litographs and photographs taken by great photographers of the 20th century such as Brassaï, Denise Colomb, Sabine Weiss or Herbert Matter, you can then discover a reconstruction of Giacometti’s studio.
