From 1900 to the present, the AUTOPHOTO exhibition at the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art explores the relationship between photography and the automobile.

Created in 1984, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art is located in  Boulevard Raspail since 1994, a few minutes from the Hôtel Raspail Montparnasse Raspail Montparnasse Hotel, in the famous steel and glass building designed by Jean Nouvel. A place that invites to share a different experience of art.

30 years after the exhibition Tribute to Ferrari, the Cartier Foundation presents the exhibition AUTOPHOTO dedicated to the relationship between automobile and photography.

Since its invention, the automobile transforms landscapes, allows to discover new horizons and upsets the conception of time. It influences photographers, offering them a new subject, a new mode of expression and a new way of traveling the world.

Through 500 works by 100 contemporary photographers, the exhibition AUTOPHOTO allows us to discover the aesthetic, social, industrial and environmental aspects of automotive from the beginning of the 20th century.

Photographers from around the world such as Jacques-Henri LartigueRobert Doisneau,  Lee FriedlanderRosângela Renno or Yasuhiro Ishimoto, are interested in the life of automotive factories, traveled roads, speed chills, panoramas from the passenger compartment, automotive vestiges…

Others, such as Sue BarrRobert AdamsEd Ruscha and Alex MacLean, light us on the transformations of the landscapes and the cities engendered by the automobile. (Highways, car parks, suburbs, …).

The exhibition also brings together models of automobiles made by the artist Alain Bublex, taking a new look at automobile design.

Finally, photo series from the 30s and 50s of Ella Maillart and Nicolas Bouvier reveal the freedom offered by the automobile and tell the first Road Trips in Asia.

Photography, another point of view that reveals the evolution of our society … An exhibition not to be missed until September 24th while staying in our hotel located closed to the Cartier Foundation.
